Going to see a film at the retro Glasgow Film Theatre is a great way to spend a couple of hours. The theatre started out as a single screen cinema over 40 years ago and is now the best attended independent cinema in Scotland, while also acting as the main hub for the Glasgow Film Festival.

Kings Theatre

Enjoy a performance in one of Scotland’s oldest theatres. Opened in 1904, Kings Theatre has played host to the world’s biggest stars while also providing amateur performers a world-class stage. And if you’re there around Christmas you can check out their famed pantomime!

Play Port

Are your kids thrill-seekers? A walk through the Glasgow canal might not be enough. Play Port allows them to experience the Forth and Clyde Canal in an unforgettable fashion. Jacobite Steam Train

Don’t go to Scotland without riding the acclaimed Hogwarts Express, otherwise known as the Jacobite Steam Train. The train begins at Fort William, which is only two and a half hours from Glasgow. 

The scenic tour includes incredible views of Ben Nevis,  Britain’s highest mountain, the cosy village of Arisaig, with a final stop in fishing port Mallaig. In between, you’ll see the country’s picture-perfect lakes. The round trip is a magical 84 miles.

Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis

The medieval Glasgow Cathedral is a truly beautiful place to visit. The first stone block was laid in 1136 and the building was consecrated in 1197. During its entire history, the cathedral has remained roofed and it has acted as a place of worship for over 800 years.

Glasgow botanist Thomas Hopkirk founded the historic Glasgow Botanic Gardens in 1817 and it’s expanded much since then. Kids and parents can take guided tours through the glasshouse fauna or follow the marked trails to try and spot some of the area’s wildlife. You’ll have a blast even if you just run around plan-free.

Pollock Country Park

When in Scotland you’ll never run out of green spaces to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh air. Pollock Country Park is the largest of these parks and flaunts stunning woodlands and sprawling gardens. You can participate in riverside strolls or walks through the forest. There are restaurants in and around the park, as well as picnic stations.

The Tall Ship

Just outside the city centre is the Tall Ship, a floating museum in a 125-year-old Clydebuilt vessel. It takes you through the logistics of being on a boat. It has a coffee shop, a play area, a mini cinema, and a souvenir shop.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a must-visit in Glasgow. It is suitable for all ages with a family-friendly atmosphere and was listed in Lonely Planet’s top 500 things to see and do in the world in 2020. Enjoy a journey through history at Kelvingrove with 22 galleries covering everything from Scottish history to ancient Egypt to dinosaurs.

The Glasgow Women's Library

The Glasgow Women’s Library is the UK’s only accredited museum dedicated to women’s lives, histories and achievements. These fascinating stories are shared through heritage walks, exhibitions, film screenings, archives and programmes. The museum is also a fully operational lending library.

The Hunterian

The Hunterian was founded in 1807 and is Scotland’s oldest public museum and art gallery. Located on the University of Glasgow campus, it is one of Scotland’s most important cultural assets. The museum is home to over a million different items and artefacts featuring galleries dedicated to Rome, ancient history and the history of medicine in West Scotland.

Scottish Football Museum

The Scottish Football Museum is a must visit for every footie fan. Founded in 2021, the museum is one of the top visitor attractions in Scotland. It has 14 galleries which detail the history of the game in Scotland from its beginnings in the 19th century to the current day. One superb bit of memorabilia on show is the Scottish Cup, the world’s oldest surviving football association trophy.

The Riverside Museum

Riverside Museum is an award-winning transport museum that lets you get a feel of the country’s shipbuilding history plus so much more. On display are everything, from skateboards to a Stormtrooper. Your kids will love jumping in to sit in old-fashioned vehicles and can even put out a fire with its interactive fire engine.

The People's Palace

Set in the city’s marvelous Glasgow Green, the People’s Palace introduces the country’s long history via artefacts, paintings, photographs, digital displays and other exhibits. Outside, kids can marvel at the restored Doulton Fountain or just roam free on the Green, the oldest public space in town.
